All Lady Trojans wrestlers do is win, win, win,. by Matthew Martinez

All the Euless Trinity girls wrestling team has done all season is win, taking victories in all 12 of its dual meets to start the year before capturing first place Friday at the Coppell Cowgirls Classic, an 18-team tournament. The biggest win of the season before Coppell came in Arlington on Nov. 13 when the Lady Trojans took first in a 27-team field in Arlington.

Mack Beggs, who was 14-0 in individual matches in the 110-pound weight class coming into the Classic, was one of four individual champions at the meet and took home the trophy for outstanding individual wrestler across all weight classes. Amber Galvan was the champion in the 119-pound weight class, Paisley Zandi was champion at 148 pounds and Nina Latu got the win at 215 pounds, while Savannah Bye took third place at 128 pounds.

Coppell took runner-up at its home tournament.

The wins come as no surprise to Trinity coach Travis Clark, who returned eight of 10 wrestlers to this year’s team who qualified for the state tournament a year ago.

“These girls just do what it takes to win,” Clark said. “They’ve all got great shots at making it back to state.”

Beggs is ranked ninth in the state at 110 pounds by wrestlingtexas.com, while Trinity has five other wrestlers currently ranked in the top 10 in their weight class.

Trinity will be competing at the Frisco Ladies’ Classic this Friday at Saturday.

Boys take third at Frisco Liberty

The Trojans, who were 11-2 in dual meets coming in, took third Saturday at a 10-team meet at Frisco Liberty. Arlington Martin, ranked second in the state in Class 6A by wrestlingtexas.com, won the tournament, while the host Liberty took second.

The third-place finish comes on the heels of a second place finish last month at the Arlington Invitational, another event won by Martin. The Trojans had four wrestlers who were undefeated in Saturday’s matches: Benjamin Bennet (126 pounds), Matt Krupp (160 pounds), Job Ayala (170 pounds) and Brooklyn Twomey (220 pounds).

“These kids only get a few weeks off from wrestling each summer,” Clark, who is in his second year coaching wrestling at Trinity, said. “There’s that level of dedication here that these kids are participating in Greco and freestyle in the offseason.”

Ayala and Twomey. who placed third at 220 pounds at Arlington, along with Nick Purcell (120 pounds) and Jayden Winfrey (145 pounds) are returning state qualifiers from last season.

In the dual match against Frisco Wakeland, which decided third place Saturday, nine Trinity wrestlers pinned their Wakeland opponents on the way to a 63-15 win for the Trojans to end the meet on a high note.

The Trojans will be competing next at the Flower Mound Marcus Duals on Saturday. Other competitors will include Marcus, Fort Worth Paschal, Saginaw, Justin Northwest, Keller and Wylie.
