Last and final day at Fargo, day 8.
Texas didnāt have any wrestlers make the finals in Greco Roman breaking a 2-year streak. The 16U boys finished with 2 All-Americans and the Junior boys finished with 4 All-Americans in the Greco Roman tournament. Texas had 3 wrestlers make the semifinals. Bryce Palmer and Jared Remington on the junior boys wrestled the most matches with 10 total each in the 2 days.
Below we recap all the day 2 wrestlers on their journeys starting with the 16U boys then the Junior boys, followed by the compete win and loss for all the wrestlers.
16U Boys Recap
113lbs Oliver Pulliam was down early and came back to tie 7-7 but lost on criteria in the round of 16, then Medical Forfeits out of the tournament.
Tyler Yancy @ 132lbs techfalls his way into the quarterfinals then runs into a tough Virginia wrestler who sends him to the consolation side, the same wrestler who techfalled Woehr in his previous match. Yancy gets through the blood round and loses his first medal round and will go for 7th place and gets it due to a medical forfeit.
Jacob Woehr @ 132lbs lost in the round of 16 but gets a quick tech fall on the consolation side, but drops a close one in his next match to end his run.
Cael Brubaker @ 138lbs wins his first match of the day in a near 6-5 decision and the same with his next match after being down come back with a 10-9 win. Brubaker has to be the comeback king, he has been down in all 3 matches and pulls out the win in the last few seconds, now in the blood round but Brubaker doesnāt get through and his Fargo journey ends 1 match of all-American.
Hunter Gordon @ 144lbs makes quick work going into the quarterfinals with a techfall, then another quick techfall to reach the semifinals, guaranteed All-American stop sign. In the semifinals Gordan had an Alaskan wrestler. Gordon score first but gave up a takedown late to lose the match.
This put Gordon in the consolation semifinals where he got a takedown in the last 40 seconds to tie the score up, but was winning on criteria, and thatās how the match ended. Gordon goes on to wrestle for 3rd place.
In Gordonās 3rd place match against Diego Valdiviezo of California Gordon strikes first for 2 points and thatās how the first period ended. At the start of the 2nd period Gordon gave up a takedown that arguably should have been his. Gordons coaches challenged, and Gordon wins the challenge as no points were score due to out of bounds. Gordon gets another point for passivity and after another 30 seconds of intense hand fighting Gordon gets himself a 3rd place stop sign.
Hunter Avalos @ 144lbs gets down early and doesnāt recover in time and drops his round of 16 match, but comes back with a win on the consolation side, but drops his next match to end his run.
Drezdyn Ballard @ 165lbs won back-to-back on day 2 then takes a loss to end his Greco Roman run.
Luke Pullig @ 190lbs got down early and comes back with a fall in his first match of the day, then gets a 2nd fall in his next match, but the next match is where it ends.
Odin Hensley @ 285lbs. drops his first match of the day and his 2nd.
Juniors Recap
Dylan Ota @ 113lbs lost his first match knocking him out of a finals return but came back with a quick techfall on the consolation side to continue. Ota after being down early comes back with a win to reach the blood round, one win away from All-American. Ota takes a loss in the blood run and wont All-American this year.
The battle between the 150lbers Micah McCaskill and Bryce Palmer was tied 3/3 going into the break with McCaskill winning on criteria. In the end Palmer pulls out the win 9-3.
Palmer gets another win to get within 2 more wins to All-American. 2 more narrow decisions of 1-1, and 5-4 puts Palmer in the medal rounds. Palmer ās next match doesnāt go his way and he wrestles for 7th place, but takes an 8th place finish.
The 165lb boys go 2/3 in their first round on day 2 with Acosta and Bedford getting the wins.
Quintraylon Johnson takes a loss then another to end his run, but got national exposure for his win with the flying squirrel.
Daniela Acosta got down early but comes back with a fall in his first match to reach the quarterfinals. Acosta had a Minnesota wrestler in the quarterfinals and after a back-and-forth scoring, Acosta gets the tech fall to advance to the semifinals. Acosta takes his first loss in the semifinals to go to the consolation semifinals where he matched up with fellow Texan Jared Remington, Acosta takes another loss to wrestle for 5th place where he takes his 3rd loss in a row to get a 6th place stop sign.
Brody Bedford gets the win with a 9-2 victory. Then follows up with a tech fall, but thatās where Bedfordās Fargo journey ends needing 2 more wins to All-American
Jared Remington in his first match of the day starts out him being down 6-0, gets down 11-6, but ends the first period up 12-11. Remington takes a loss here 19-12, then follows up with a tech fall on the consolation side where Remington and Ashurov meet to see who gets to make the blood round. The win goes to Remington. Remington reels off 2 more techfalls to reach the consolation semifinals where Daniel Acosta was waiting for him. Remington doesnāt stop and gets the techfall over Acosta to wrestle for 3rd place.
Remington had the #1 seed Sullivan Ramos of Wisconsin. Half way through the first period Ramos strikes first with a throw out of bounds for 2 points and thatās how the first period ends. In the 2nd period 1 minute in Ramos gets another point and Remington goes down. The Referee gave over 20 seconds of time for Ramos to turn and Remington stopped him, but Ramos came back with another takedown and a couple of turns to give Remington a 4th place stop sign.
Leo Ashurov takes a loss against the #2 seed but comes back on the consolation side with a win to continue his quest but runs into Remington who ends his Fargo run.
Aiden Cooley @ 215lbs keeps his winning and unscored on streak going into the quarterfinals. Cooley finally gets score upon in the quarterfinals giving up a passive point. Then gets a passive point of his own in the 2nd period, followed by a 4-point throw and a fall to reach the semifinals.
In the semifinals. Cooley gave up his first points of the tournament and took a 3-1 loss to put him in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals Cooley gives up another 3 points but this time gets the win 6-3 to advance to the 3rd place match.
Cooley had Myron Mendez of Florida in his 3rd place match. Mendez was unseeded. Mendez gets the first passivity point and Cooley goes down and gets turned, but gets 1 point for reversal and after Cooley getting warned a couple times about different things the period ended 3-1. The 2nd period starts and Cooley gets a takedown and a turn in the first 30 seconds. Cooley gets another caution and gives up 2 points for something to tie it back up 5-5 losing by criteria. Mendez gets a takedown this time. Cooley gets another caution for fingers and this time the head ref gets involved about not calling headbutts on Mendez. Things calmed down until last 10 seconds and the refs disagree on who head butted who, the call was Mendez headbutted, but they (the refs) didnāt want to give it to Cooley and decide the match, which they did anyway by not calling it. Cooley has to settle for 4th place.
KeShawn Jones @ 285lbs drops his first match in the round of 16, but gets his next win on the consolation side, then another before falling in the blood round 1 win short of All-American.
