This season feels different for my family. My son’s wrestling season was cut short due to a knee injury during practice, requiring surgery and an intense focus on rehabilitation. Though he isn’t on the mat this year, he remains a part of the team, supporting his teammates while working hard to heal and come back stronger. As a family, we continue to travel with the team, cheering them on from the stands. Still, it’s bittersweet to watch the tournaments without seeing him compete.
At the BootJack Brawl, I was inspired by the dedication and heart of the wrestlers. The matches across all weight classes showcased incredible talent and determination.
In the 106-pound division, Christian Aguirre of Mission Sharyland Pioneer took first place with an impressive 8-3 decision over Santiago Miranda of Mission Sharyland. Christian’s senior experience was evident as he controlled the match, while Santiago, a sophomore, put up a strong fight. Watching Santiago grow on the mat and demonstrate strength and resilience has been inspiring. Isaac Mireles of McAllen secured third place in this competitive weight class.
At 120 pounds, Gabriel Rivera of Mission Sharyland Pioneer battled his way to victory in a 12-7 decision over Bryan Estrada of Mission Sharyland. Gabriel’s focus and strategy were evident throughout the match. In the third-place contest, Sebastian Navarro of La Joya Palmview pinned Leonardo Vasquez of Mission Sharyland Pioneer in just 37 seconds, a quick finish that highlighted his skill.
In the 126-pound division, Aiden Baker of Mission Sharyland dominated his match against Rodrigo Nuncio of La Joya Palmview, winning by a major decision of 14-1. Aiden’s control and precision made it clear why he’s one of the top wrestlers in his class after placing fourth at the 2024 UIL State Championship.
Sebastian Contreras of Mission Sharyland Pioneer shined in the 132-pound division, pinning Matthew Castillo of Mission Sharyland at the 4:40 mark to claim first place. Watching Sebastian’s senior leadership on the mat was inspiring, while Matthew’s determination made this match a battle to remember. This matchup could be a preview of the district finals.
