When Travis Clark took over as the head coach of Euless Trinity wrestling programs, the tournament had 30 teams and used six mats.
A decade later, the event is one of the must-go-to events in the Lone Star State.
This year’s tournament featured 76 teams and 12 mats were used for the two-day varsity tournament held Friday and Saturday. Before that, 700 JV wrestlers took part in the tournament on Thursday.
“In multiple brackets, we had top-ranked boys or girls or top teams,” Clark said. “It was fun to watch head-to-head to see who is at that top spot.”
Clark said the tournament was a good preview for his squads as well as 22 teams from Region 1 were at the event at B.J. Murray Activity Center.
While the boys’ field was dominated by Arlington Martin, other Dallas-area teams had an amount of success in the tournament.
Argyle Liberty Christian’s Tanner Casaubon won a plaque for the most pins in the least amount of times. He had six pins, tied for a tournament-high, but did so in 7:15.
Keller’s Steven Heck and Frisco Emerson’s Landon Purtle both also had six pins.
Keller ISD had three champions between three of its four high schools.
