CHAMPION: Olivia Degeorgio
Olivia had a dominant run at these championships. She pinned her way to the finals where she met Mia Diaz. Mia put a fight but ultimately, Olivia was just too dominant and capped off her run with a 13-2 decision.
Cruz took 3rd and rounding out the placers were Walsh at 4th, Martin at 5th and Rodriguez at 6th.

CHAMPION: Amanda Mcaleavey
Mcaleavey also had a dominant run to the finals but it was the bottom of the bracket that provided the nail biting excitement. Arceneaux and Allred put on a great match that ended up with Arceneaux getting a 2 point reversal in the waning seconds of the triple overtime period to punch her ticket to the finals to meet Mcaleavey.
Mcaleavey just proved a little too much for Arceneaux as she won the gold with a 5-1 decision in the finals.
Allred pinned Magdaleno to take 3rd with Martinez taking 5th and Garcia taking the final spot.

CHAMPION: Samara Chavez
The prediction here was that Samara and Carmen would meet in the finals and that is what happened. Samara pinned her way to the finals whereas Carmen had a tough match against San Antonio Lee’s Crystal Venegas in the semis. Venegas managed to score 3 points in the last minute of the match to force an overtime period. A takedown then ended Crystal’s run for the gold and Allred facing an all familiar Chavez.
The finals was a rematch of the Region 1 finals with Samara winning 7-2.
Hanks took 3rd with a strong run as her loss to the eventual champion pushed her into the consolation side of the bracket. Venegas, Hernandez, and Garcia rounded out final 3 places for this weight class.

CHAMPION: Camille Fournier
The prediction here was a Fournier-Crane finals which is what occurred. Fournier was dominant all tournament and that continued into the finals.
Bazemore and Broadrick fought for 3rd with Broadrick eeking out a 1-0 win. Rivera took 5th with Zejda taking 6th.

CHAMPION: Devin Patton
The bottom of the bracket produced the expected semifinals match with Patton pulling out at 10-4 win against Harper. The surprise was that Martinez upset #1 ranked Moreno to make it to the finals against Patton.
Patton had a dominant performance with a pin in the first period.
Harper bounces back to take 3rd against Moreno and Lafferty taking 5th with Baugher taking 6th.

CHAMPION: Jordan Suarez
One of the bigger upsets of the tournament was the semifinals match we expected with Suarez making a 3rd attempt to dethrone Basham. The third time was a charm as she pulled out a last second takedown to win 4-2. She wrapped up her senior year with a pin to win the gold.
Basham comes back to take 3rd against Martinez with Denney and Doblado round out the final two spots.

Champion: Leilani Hernandez
Hernandez was the dark horse here and came into the tournament wrestling really well and knocking out several high ranks on her way to the gold against Miranda.
Massaviol takes 3rd against Foster with Wold taking 5th and Wegman taking 6th.

Champion: Kaitlyn Bryant
Bryant also had a dominant run to the finals with 3 pins all occurring within the first minute of action! She pulls out a 6-0 win against Bello in the finals to take gold.
Wilcox takes 3rd with a pin against Steele. Lopez takes 5th against Gonzalez.

Champion: Brittyn Corbishly
Corbishly continued her undefeated record through this tournament culminating in a fall against Blinn to win it all. Sealey wins by fall against Sandoval to take 3rd. Kempf pins Zahran to take 5th.

Champion: Traeh Haynes
This weight class also has an undefeated champion in Traeh Haynes. It was a little tense in the semifinals with Haynes being called for stalling in the waning seconds of the 3rd period against Francis to force an overtime. An off balanced Francis allowed Haynes to get a takedown and her trip into the finals against Latta.
Haynes showed her dominance with a fall in the first period.
Francis bounces back to take 3rd against Ramos with Vera taking 5th against Youngblood.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
It was a great two days at the Berry Center and we were spectators to a high level of wrestling that speaks to not only the skills of these wrestlers but the hard work they put in all season long. As the UIL folk style season draws to a close, we can all look back and see what a roller coaster of season it was. Some wrestlers experienced the ultimate highs while some experienced the lowest of heartbreaks. But through it all, they have continued training and putting in countless hours to train week in and week out. Such dedication is testament to the type of person wrestling is helping them become.
A shout out must also be given to all the coaches and staff out there who gave up their evenings and weekends for their wrestlers. The season is long and it becomes exhausting but the coaches are always there with incredible energy every day. The kids couldn’t have done it without you all! Thank you.
Now it is time to take a little breather. Then gear up for freestyle….and next thing you know, it is folk style season again. See ya next year at the Berry Center!
