6A Boys Tournament Team Race

District is over, and the Region tournaments are this weekend. There was a ton of exciting action all over the state!  As we get closer to state, we’ve already taken a look at the individuals, now let’s look at some of the top teams in the state, and see if they are still on a path to make some noise at the Berry center.

The top 5 tournament teams in the state are as follows:

  1. Allen High School         Region II               District  6
  2. College Park High School         Region II               District 8
  3. Arlington Martin High School         Region  I               District 3
  4. Katy High School            Region III              District 9
  5. (Tie) Klein High School           Region II               District 8
  6. (Tie) Schertz Clemens High School Region IV             District 14

Allen High school backed up their #1 ranking last week wining their district championship by 117.5 points!!!!  Allen walked away with 325.5 points to take the win over 2nd place Prosper High School. Allen showed some incredible dominance here!!  They qualified all 14 weight classes to the Region II Tourney with none of their wrestlers finishing worse than 3rd!  They took home 9 Golds, 3 Silvers, and 2 Bronze medals.  This as an incredible, yet routine showing for Allen High.  Region II is essentially a home tourney for the returning state champs.  Not sure if anyone has the firepower to challenge them at Region or State.  This was a big statement by the Eagles.  The rest of the state may be competing for second.

College Park high school has an impressive showing as well and make a convincing argument for having the tougher district.  College Park scored 299.5 points to stay ahead of district rival Klein High School by 87.5 points. Top 3 teams in this district were all over 200 points! College park will be wresting in 13 out of the 14 weight classes at the Region II tournament. They finished district with 7 Champions, 3 Runner ups, one 3rd place finish, and 2 – 4th place medals.  Despite my previous statement, these Cavaliers don’t seem to have a second-place mentality.  Look for these young men to give Allen all they can handle and maybe more over the next 2 weeks!

Arlington Martin walked away with a district championship of their own! They scored 254 points at the district 3 – 6 A Championships to stay 98 points ahead of runner up South Grand Prairie. Like College Park, they will only be missing one weight when they travel to the region I tournament.  Martin left district with 8 Champions, 2 runner ups, one 3rdplace, and 2- 4th place qualifiers.  If there is any one to challenge them at region it will be El Paso Franklin.  Other than that, these young men are on a mission!!

Katy High won a district championship of their own. Katy scored 248.5 points to take a win by 67.5 points over runner up Seven Lakes High School.  The current State Duals Champions have been a force in the Houston Area this season.  Katy will be taking 11 young men to wrestle to the region meet.  In addition to this, they will have alternates at 138 and 195.  They look to be in position to take the regional crown, with Cypress Ranch being their main challenger in Region III.  The name of the game at the tournaments past here is quality over quantity.  Can Katy be just as strong with 11 weights as they have been with 14? I bet I know their answer!

Klein High is our 1st district runner up in the rankings, but they were district runner up to our #2 team.  Klein Scored 212 points in district and will be taking 8 weights to the Region II tournament.  No real reason to think Klein won’t stop grinding out top spots as they keep moving.  Not sure if they have wrestled a full line up all season and have still been a force in the State. Klein had 4 Champions, 1 runner up, one 3rd place finish, and two 4th placers to finish out the tournament.  They will be traveling with alternates at 170 and 285.  This is a young and hungry team (only 1 senior at 220) trying to find their identity under a battle-hardened coach in his 1st season in Blue and Gold.  Klein may not be ready for a Team State Championship, but these young men will make sure their presence is felt!

Shertz Clemens is tied for 5th in the tournament team rankings with Klein but seemed to stumble a bit at the district tournament.  They placed 4th with 150 points the first 3 teams were SA Johnson (189), SA Churchill (164) and SA Madison (158).  This could be a little concerning at first glance, but as you get into higher quality tournaments, the quality of your wrestlers come into play.  Shertz Clemens finished with 3 champions, one 3rd placer, and two 4thplacers.  If these wrestlers step up at the regional meet who knows what can happen?!?!? If All 6 can qualify to state, they’re sure to make some noise.  In addition to this, they will have alternates at 113, 126 and 195.  Should those guys get back in a bracket, expect this team to have some new life!!

Of Note are New Braunfels and Cypress Ranch.  Both ranked in the top 5 as Dual teams but sitting just on the outside as Tournament teams.  Both squads earned a district championship this weekend.  Cy-Ranch scored 243.5 points to win, only 4.5 points ahead of district rival, Cypress Woods, and New Braunfels scored 222 points, to take the trophy from Lake Travis who was 13.5 points behind.  Cy Ranch will be taking a squad of 8 kids, and New Braunfels, will have 11 at their regional tournaments this weekend.  Both are sure to be factors in the Regional team standings, but can they qualify enough to be in the conversation at state?  We’ll know Saturday night!

With 3 out of the top 5 teams being in Region II, expect there to be fireworks in Allen this weekend!

There will be NO EASY MATCHES from now on!!

Good luck to everyone this weekend!!!
