6A Boys Road to State 106-120

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too early to start making predictions, but who really cares, it’s championship season!!! Data for district races are too spread out, so any predictions there are, are just shots in the dark.  Because of that, lets look at who MIGHT be at the state meet ASSUMING all goes well at the district level and everyone who is supposed to be there will be at the region meet.  This is for the 6A boys only and will be spread out over the next week a few weights at a time based on the current rankings.

106

TONS of new blood at 106. Out of 20 ranked wrestlers, 13 are either freshmen or sophomores.

Region I.   is any one’s guess.  Outside of Ryncarz of Arlington Martin and Ventura of Irving, the waters are murky.  Tons of scrappers will be in the mix to make a name for themselves, but IF all goes well, Ryncarz and Ventura go 1-2.

Region II.  is loaded.  No surprise to see Allen leading the charge here with 2 ranked wrestlers!! I might have to call an upset here though.  I would love to see a Final match with Jimenez of Ellison and Garcia of Allen.  Jimenez was a beast at 113 before the new year, I’m giving the pick to him in an upset. Marino of College Park has been coming on strong towards the end of the season, so look for him to make a push for a spot.  I think Richardson of Prosper steals the final spot here.

Region III.  The lone senior here is Douglas Melrose of Katy Morton Ranch.   Being the oldest here, doesn’t guarantee a clear path.  Melrose will compete for the region III crown with and insane amount of talent at 106.  Freshman Alec Robeson of Cypress Ranch seems to be the Immediate threat to Melrose for the region crown.  Robeson has a couple of losses to Melrose, but each match has seen Robeson close the gap a bit.  Martinez of Katy, Salinas of 7 lakes, and Harper of Tompkins look to be on a Collision course for the last 2 spots.  Martinez of Katy has a bit of an edge here in my opinion, and I’m going to pick Harper of Tompkins to be in the 3rdplace Match.  Winner there will be a toss-up.  Harper has been surging, but Martinez has put together a great season.

Region IVhas been a bit of a mystery.  The top 2 guys , Guerra of Johnson, and Hernandez of Reagan have not seen a lot of mat time as of late, but if they are healthy come district week, look for those two to make it to region, and be in the mix for a State berth.  That leaves Almeida of Los Fresnos, Sloss of Edinburg and Davila of Lee looking for 2 of the other spots. Being closer to the San Antonio area gives Davila an advantage. Picks here would be Guerra, Hernandez, Davila and Sloss

Picks for the State Tourney:

Melrose of Morton Ranch

Robeson of Cy-Ranch

Martinez of Katy

Harper of Tompkins

Guerra of Johnson

Hernandez of Reagan

Davila of Lee

Sloss of Los Fresnos

Jimenez of Ellison

Garcia of Allen

Marino of College Park

Richardson of Prosper

Ryncarz of Martin

Ventura of Irving

Last 2 spots in region I are too close to call

113

At this weight, we start to see our upper classmen becoming more of a Factor with almost and even split between Upper (11thand 12th) and under (9thand 10th) classmen in the state rankings.

Region I. Rodriquez of Pebble hills seems to be the clear favorite in region I.  After Rodriquez, Keller ISD should be sending 2 113s in Garcia of Central, and Procopio of Timber Creek.   The 4this anyone’s guess, but I’m picking Derek Acevedo of El Paso Montwood to take the spot.

Region II.  is a bit all over the place. The lone nationally ranked wrestler, Brown of Allen, should run the table here, but after that!?!?!??! Nguyen of Cain beat McGuire of Klein in the tie breaker period a couple of weeks ago, but that might be the only ranked wrestler notched on his belt. McGuire has Shown flashes of brilliance, but also flashes of being a freshman.  Same could be said of Patillo of College Park.  Add in Ross of Vandegrift, and who knows???

Region III.  Should see Harrell of Cy-Ranch and Santiago of Cinco Ranch going 1-2, then comes a flood of talent.  Which ever Katy 113 (Manibog or Newton) earns the varsity spot by District, should be in the mix, and Ricardo Pena of Cy-Falls is starting to establish himself.

Region IV.  will be a log jam of talent.  Laughery of Lake Travis is the clear favorite after moving up a weight, and having an incredible freestyle season.  Outside of Laughrey, nothing is clear. Starr of Westlake is making a climb as of late, so look for him to grab a spot, while everyone else has been up and down.

Picks for the State Tourney:

Rodriquez – Pebble hills

Garcia – Keller Central

Procopio – Keller Timber Creek

Acevedo – Montwood

Laughery – Lake Travis

Starr – Westlake

Banda – San Marcos

Huerta – MacArthur

Harrell – Cy-Ranch

Santiago- Cinco Ranch

Manibog – Katy

Pena – Cy-Falls

Brown – Allen

Nguyen – Klein Cain

McGuire – Klein

Patillo – College Park

120

At 120 the talent seems to be spread a bit more evenly.

Region I.  has Chavez of Arlington Martin, clearly ahead of the lead pack.  The rest of the pack looks like it is Cambere of Flower mound, Reed of Euless Trinity, and Garza of Arlington.   While these Metroplex studs look like they are in charge, I’m sure there will be a 120 in El Paso or the Panhandle who will have a say in the matter.  Could Fabian Najera of El Paso Coronado be the one?

Region II.  has another Allen wrestler in Kade Moore. Moore should have a challenge from either De La Cruz of College Park, or Flowers of Rockwall.  It all depends on who is firing on all cylinders when region rolls around. DeLaCruz may be the hungrier here, having had to wrestle sub varsity last season, but will he be healthy?  George of Wylie, and Jacops of Vandegrift will be in the mix.  Can the kid from Vandegrift break into the State tourney his first year?

Region III.  might give us the best match up. If we could be lucky enough to see a final between Crandall of Katy, and Lopez of Westside, it would be worth the price of admission. Last time they met saw Lopez on Top, but the Crandall isn’t ready to lay down just because Lopez is a senior. White of Kingwood, and Moreno of Morton Ranch are the easy picks to finish out region III, unless Cayard of Clear Lake has anything to say about it.

Region IV,  Down in the South, We have Lugo of Madison, Rodriguez of Judson, Rodriguez of Los Fresnos, and Barrera of Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo.  This goes to the one who will have the best day.  The wrestlers from Madison and Los Fresnos are hitting their stride as of late, but this one will be a battle of heart!

Pick for State Tourney

Cambere – Flower Mound

Reed -Euless Trinity

Najera – Coronado

Moore- Allen

Flowers – Rockwall

De La Cruz – College Park

Jacops – Vandegrift

Lopez – Westside

White – Kingwood

Cayard – Clear Lake
