2023 THSWCA State Duals 5A Boys

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Lucas Lovejoy felt the agony of defeat and a few minutes later, they were back on top of the world.

The Leopards fought back to tie the Class 5A championship match at the Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association State Dual at 36-36 with a pin in the final match.

The defending state champions were once down 21 points but got the tie. Then the tiebreaker scenario came out.

The announcement first came out that Comal Smithson Valley was the state champions. The San Antonio school and No. 13 seed in the 16-team field celebrated.

Lovejoy coach Mike Eaton, when hearing the news, smacked his hands together and walked to the back of the line to as the teams shook hands.

A second announcement followed before the trophies were handed out: A review of the tiebreaking criterion was reviewed again.
