Jose Salinas, the sophomore 106-pounder from Katy Seven Lakes is the Mortgage X-Change Wrestler of the Week. Salinas started his week with a major decision over Katy Tompkin’s Austin Harper to win the Spartan Hall of Fame 106lb title in his home gym. He and Harper squared off again two more times last week (in a dual meet, and then in the semi-finals of the Lone Star Arm Bar Invitational), with each match decided by a single point. Jose’s winning streak seemed to be all but over when he narrowly avoided being pinned by Katy Cinco Ranch’s Esai Deras in the first period of the championship match, finishing the period in a 5-0 hole. In what was the closest and most exciting finals bout of the tournament, Jose closed the gap to 5-4 with less than 40 seconds remaining in the match. Conceding an escape point, Salinas carried a 6-4 deficit into the final 30 seconds before scoring a clutch takedown at the buzzer to send the match into overtime, where he went right back on the attack to score a nearly identical take down early in the sudden victory period and take home is second gold medal in a week with another close win against a district rival.
According to Seven Lakes head coach Mike Demarchi, “Jose is an extremely coachable young athlete that is always asking questions and looking to improve. He is committed to getting at least 1% better in every practice or competition. He holds himself and his teammates accountable in everything we do. Great all around young man.”
Congratulations to Jose Salinas
