Byron Nelson’s Kaylynn Albrecht is Wrestling Texas wrestler of the week. Last month, Kaylynn had a scary ending to her UIL high school career, suffering a head injury briefly loosing consciousness and having seizures at the end of her finals bout against champion (and fellow national finalist) Ashley Lekas. Prior to being transported to the hospital, Albrecht had a lengthly heart-to-heart chat with Euless Trinity head coach, and Team USA Women’s director Travis Clark. One of the key messages: let’s go win a national title.
At the USAW National Folkstyle Championships, Kaylynn made, literally, short work of the bottom half of the bracket, winning each match in progressively quicker first period pins 1:29, 1:15, 0:22 and, in the semi-finals, 0:18 seconds! In her championship bout against Team California’s Michelle Kamyshin, Kaylynn took an 3-0 lead early in the 2nd period, before giving up a penalty point and a reversal to head into the 3rd tied 3-3. Kaylynn maintained top control for entire third, sending the match into overtime, where she overpowered Kamyshin for the Sudden Victory win and the national title.
According to coach Clark, “Kaylynn is one of the hardest working wrestlers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Her focus, determination and dedication towards thee sport of wrestling and life is the reason I have no doubt that she will go on and achieve greatness. She has a natural leadership ability and energy to her that benefits other wrestlers in the room.”
