5A Girls State Preview

Our final look-ahead to UIL state is in the 5A girls’ bracket, where two returning champions are looking to defend their titles.  With the posting of this week’s coaches’ polls, there were a few shake-up in the rankings, but not many huge surprises. Here is a weight by weight analysis of the 5A girls brackets:

95 lb

#1 Jaclyn McNichols, last year’s 3rd place finisher from Saginaw is at the bottom of the bracket with #4 Sarah Martinez from El Paso Hanks, leaving #2 Janauya Butler of Carrollton Creekview and Azle’s #3 Jasmine Howard (who has been #1 much of the season) on the top half. McNichols defeated Howard in the regional finals and may end up in a rematch for the title.

102 lb

#1 ranked Madison Brown of Northwest will not have an easy road to the finals, courtesy of the draw and Carrollton Creekview’s #3 Yessica Rodriguez’s regional finals win over Foster’s Valerie Carreon (previously ranked #2). Brown and Carreon could meet in round 2, with the winner potentially facing current #2 Elexis Kalar of Austin Johnson.  This bracket is as top-heavy as they come.  The fourth regional champion, #8 Kaylee Romo of El Paso Burges is on the bottom half with Rodriguez.

110 lb

The regional results certainly scrambled the voters’ deck at 110lb. Frisco Liberty’s Savannah West stays at #1 and drew into the bottom of the bracket with #2 Gabriela Ajuinada of Carrollton Turner. #3 Marlene Avila of Fabens and #4 Violet Hall of Leander Rouse shot up the rankings with their regional championships and are placed up top.

119 lb

The coaches’ poll voters rank defending champion Alexis Hana (42-5) of Azle at #2 behind undefeated #1 Isabelle Gonzalez (33-0) of El Paso Hanks. Regardless of order, they are placed at opposite ends of the bracket. #3 Mikayla Dockweiler of Corpus Christi King, with her 52 season wins is on the bottom half with Gonzalez and #4 Hanna Robert of Waller is up top.

128 lb

No changes in the top 2 rankings this week as #1 Jacqueline Ghent (40-1) of CC Veterans Memorial and #2 Bailey Gilmore (25-0) are in the top half of the bracket.  That leaves #3 Sydney Dawson of Chisholm Trail and #4 Angelina Baltazar of El Paso Hanks in the bottom.  With Dawson and Baltazar winning their regions, last week’s #3 and 4 wrestlers, Tearia Hartfield of Arlington Seguin and Miah Kline of El Paso Bel Air are forced up in the tougher side of the bracket. So based on last week’s rankings, we have the top 4 in the upper half.

138 lb

Yes, you saw that correctly, that cover photo was of #2 Eileen Webb of Victoria West putting 6A #1 Hunter Robinson on her back (the only time it has happened all year). Eileen shares the top half of the bracket with #1 Mattison Parker of Northwest Eaton. #3 Danielle Walker of Waller and El Paso Austin’s #4 Jocelyn Ramos are lined up in the bottom half.

148 lb

Current #1 Alexandria Lefort of Lucas Lovejoy and #2 Kierra Williams of Frisco, last year’s 3rd place winner, are battling in the upper half of the bracket. In the bottom half, we have last year’s runner-up and current #3 Adelyhdra Perez of Uvalde and #4 Karestin Andrews from Grapevine as well as region 1 champion #9 Bonnie Lopez of Amarillo River Road.

165 lb

Last year’s runner-up, #3 Gesika Silva of Amarillo Caprock lost in the region 1 finals to undefeated #1 Jaydn Sayre-Adona (33-0) of El Paso Hanks. Jaydn is placed in the lower half of the bracket with #2 Adrena Carter of Northwest, last year’s 3rd place winner. Up top with Silva are the other two regional champs, #4 Anessa Vega of CC Veterans Memorial and #5 Kiya Jones of Hunstville.

185 lb

Undefeated #1 Natalia Villegas (26-0) of CC Veterans Memorial is in the lower half with #4 Malachi Kyser of Arlington Seguin, along with state-placer #5 Eloni Sowell of Humble, whose only loss of the year was in the regional finals. Defeating Sowell and taking over the #2 spot is Morgan Elvin of Lucas Lovejoy.  She is in the upper half with #3Ashton Hernandez of Hereford.

215 lb

Will history repeat? Last year’s 1-2-3 finishers are back.  Defending champion Ambry McCann of Lubbock Monterey, inexplicably ranked #2, is on the upper bracket with current #1 Kacie Rodriguez of CC Moody.  After losing in the regional finals, last year’s 3rd place finisher #3 Alyssa Alvarez of Prosper is in the same quarter as McCann.  Last year’s runner-up, #4 Lily Mills of Canyon Randall, is in the lower half of the bracket with the other two regional champions, #6 Asanta Doe of Northwest Eaton and #5 Shelby Squires of Bryan Rudder.
