Dallas Christian School (Mesquite, TX) will have a Varsity wrestling team for the first time in more than a decade. The school hired Troy Mercer, a Rockwall-Heath alum (State placer) and a collegiate wrestler (Oauchita Baptist/Lyon College) to be the Head Coach. DCS is a TAPPS school.
As a new program, its unlikely they will have a full roster. But, as of now, they expect 10-12 kids to participate. Unfortunately, as a small school, most kids compete in multiple sports and they have 8 kids still playing football in the playoffs.
A few of the kids have some wrestling experience. Matthew Mata probably has the most experience having wrestled TXUSAW Youth for 6+ years and Middle School last year. He took 3rd at TXUSAW state in Division 4 130lb – Open bracket last year. He finished 2nd in MS state at 132lbs and took 3rd at the Cotton Bowl Nationals in D4-130. He will likely compete at either 138 or 145 this season. A couple of our kids wrestled youth for Team Monday 5+ years ago and two wrestled JV for their high schools last year (Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath). But, all the other kids will be brand new to the sport. Their first team tournament will be at First Baptist Academy on Dec. 16th.
The DCS mascot is the Chargers.
Coach Troy Mercer returned to DFW after graduating from Lyon College. He started a wrestling/grappling academy called Apex Grappling Academy where he is the owner/instructor. He still competes in grappling/jiu jitsu tournaments. He’s the perfect fit for a start up program. He came highly recommended by Shane Selzenoff (HC at Rockwall Heath) and was endorsed by his college coach.
The Dallas Christian School has had tremendous support from the Rockwall and Rockwall Heath coaches. And, they have been welcomed by several others to compete in local meets. They don’t have a full schedule but enough tournaments as a new program. But, over all, they have been very impressed with the support from the DFW wrestling community.
