Wrestling Takes on Harvey

The UHD Wrestling team is incredibly grateful to report no injuries and only minimal damage to some of our wrestlers’ personal property following Hurricane Harvey. Our team members were mostly fortunate in this regard. We know though that many of our supporters, however, were not so lucky. That’s why several members of the team–those not confined to their neighborhoods due to flooding–responded when trucks full of donated supplies arrived in Houston. The team helped to unload and deliver the goods to at least six different shelters throughout the Houston-area.
While our wrestlers were safe and mostly dry, the same cannot be said for many of their classmates, professors, and University staff whose homes were flooded. UHD President Juan Sanchez Munoz has pledged to support these UHD community members as each works to repair the damage to their homes. To this end, the University of Houston-Downtown has setup the Gator Relief Fund. The response from Houstonians willing to lend a hand to neighbors has been overwhelming, and the Gator Relief Fund offers you an opportunity to support the ongoing needs of those most affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Calling All Recruits for Oct. 21st Open House

The University of Houston-Downtown will host its Open House for prospective students on October 21st. That weekend is also Homecoming Weekend, and the UHD Wrestling team will have its tent setup to meet recruits at the annual TailGator event. High School seniors and juniors interested in continuing their wrestling career at the University of Houston-Downtown are encouraged to attend. Last year, the team won the award for best tailgate party. Don’t miss the fun! RSVP below and reply to this email to let Coach Sykes know you’re coming!

Team Prepares for Season

Hurricane Harvey flooded the lower levels of some of the University’s buildings, and even forced the closure of the West Gymnasium where the team practices. However, the University of Houston-Downtown is fortunate to sit along the White Oak Bayou trails, and the team has taken full advantage of its position as it prepares for the upcoming season. As the floodwaters receded, the team began hosting conditioning practices on the trails. Returning team members have used the opportunity to meet the several new faces joining the team this year, and to begin the all-important process of team bonding through the shared struggle of these tough conditioning sessions. Nothing can stop our team from training–not even a hurricane!

UHD Names New Head Coach

The University of Houston-Downtown has named Tim Sykes as its new Head Wrestling Coach. Coach Sykes has spent the past two seasons as the team’s assistant coach, during which he helped three UHD wrestlers to All-American status and one to Scholar All-American status. Coach Sykes attended the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Leadership Academy and Convention this Summer, and he is eager to begin implementing the lessons he learned there as he strives to create a lasting and competitive collegiate-level program in Houston for the area’s youth and high school wrestler’s to aspire to. Coach Sykes is a native of Cleveland, OH where he wrestled for Case Western Reserve University, an NCAA Division III school.
