Wrestler of the Week – Hunter Robinson of The Woodlands College Park HS

All-American Hunter Robinson is this WrestlingTexas wrestler of the week. Hunter is a junior at The Woodlands College Park HS and competes in the girls 6A 138-lb weight class. As a sophomore, Hunter finished 3rd at the UIL State tournament, compiling a season record of 23-3. After  defeating the defending 138-lb champion and eventual runner-up Kayla DeLeon in the regional finals, Hunter ran into defending 2-time 128-lb champion and career-undefeated Alex Liles in the state semi-finals, pushing her to a consolation championship finish. As a Freshman, Robinson was the state runner-up behind DeLeon in the 138-lb weight class.

In April, Hunter won the State Freestyle Championship at 138-lb, in May she finished 4th in the USAW Cadet Women’s National Championships and in July she finished 2nd in the USA Wrestling Cadet Women’s Freestyle National Championships in Fargo, ND.

Hunter begins her junior season ranked 2nd in the WrestlingTexas 138lb 6A girls poll, behind 3-time undefeated champion Liles and ahead of last year’s runner-up and 2016 champion DeLeon. With her signature Wonder Woman socks and Sansa Stark braids, it won’t be hard to spot Hunter as she starts another campaign towards a potential Robinson-DeLeon III showdown at regionals and a third straight trip to the UIL state podium.

According to College Park HS head coach Erik Spjut, “She is one of those athletes you’d be lucky to get on your team once or twice in a career.” He describes the 3.3 GPA student as his most coachable athlete who “just does everything right on and off the mat.”¬† Discussing the heavily loaded 138-lb weight class, even though there could be an opportunity for someone to move up a weight, Spjut indicated that he expected Hunter to stay in the mix at 138 this season, “she won’t be running from anybody.”

Congratulations to Hunter, and good luck this season!
