Bracketology – UIL State Tournament – 5A boys key match-ups

They are loading up the buses and airplanes today to converge on Berry Center in Cypress for the UIL State wrestling championships.  With many of the smaller schools not keeping stats on trackwrestling and many results from the far reaches of the state not being consistently reported, there are some 5A boys that have flown below our radar most of the season – making it more challenging to assess who’s who in the pecking order. Thanks to the feedback and input that has come in via our forum and other social media, we have at least a reasonable assessment, but we should know a lot more by Saturday afternoon.

Based on our most recent rankings, here are the the most intriguing bouts to watch in the morning session tomorrow:

The top of this bracket has the #1, #3, and #4 ranked wrestlers, but the bottom half of the bracket has the more interesting first round match ups.

#6 Ivan Ozuna, Grulla vs #8 Joseph Cortez, Lubbock Monterey
#5 Dario Rivera, Carrolton Turner vs #13 Jackson Bourne Frisco Ready

The #1 and #2 ranked wrestlers are both on the top side of the bracket.  The bigger story here is the bottom half of the bracket is stacked, with #3, #4, #5 ranked wrestlers – 3 returning state placers.

#1 and #2 are on a collision course to meet in the semis.  While the #3, #4, and #5 ranked wrestlers are going to have to battle it out on the top side.

This weight has the #1 and #3 wrestlers on the top half of the bracket.  Look for a possible match up between #2 and #6 in the second round on the bottom side.

The bottom side of this bracket looks to be the tougher side, with the #3, #4, #5, #7 and #9 ranked wrestlers. There could be a #3 vs #4 match up in the quarters on the bottom. The top half has the top ranked wrestlers in the weight.
