Team Overview – 5A – Boys

As we move on to 5A – things start to get tight.  This is only the 5th year that UIL has had a second division for wrestling, and it looks like anyone’s title to grab.  Defending champion Rockwall Heath is up in 6A now, so we are guaranteed a new champ.  Based on qualification numbers, nothing really sticks out – Dumas has the edge with 10 wrestlers in the field, but Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial has seven, as does Ft Worth Chisholm Trail and Carrollton Creekview. Five teams have six, including three-time champion Canyon Randall.

Looking at the number of top-8 ranked boys, there is even LESS separation, seven teams have four; Veterans, Frisco Liberty, Dumas, Randall, Rio Grande City,  Creekview and two-time champion Frisco Centennial. Eight teams are right behind with three.  Looking at only top-4 ranked boys, Randall has a slight edge with 4, followed by six others with 3 each.  There are no less than eight teams coming into the Berry Center with a legitimate chance of walking away with the title.  Here is a summary of teams with top-8 boys:

Team Overview – 5A – Girls

Are we ready for dynasty talk again?  Well, it might not be a sure bet just yet, but three-time defending champion El Paso Hanks is coming in looking really strong, with three returning state champs and a runner up from last year – and that’s only half of their 8 qualifiers.  Canyon Randall and Houston Northside are looking to make a run, with seven entrants, Chisholm Trail and Amarillo Caprock have 6 each.

Looking at rankings, Hanks leads all with 6 top-8 wrestlers, including 4 #1’s. Randall is not too far off with five, including 2 #2’s.  Veterans Memorial, Frisco Liberty and Azle have 4 each.  It would take a couple of upsets, but there are plenty of 5A girls teams in position to dethrone the champions.  Detailed view of top-8 wrestlers by team:

All that being said – we haven’t had weigh-ins yet – we don’t know who is sick, injured or off weight – and report cards just came out as well – academic eligibility could sneak in there without warning.  You can pretty much take it to the bank with the Allen boys in 6A – after that, there are hardly any clear favorites – all eyes will be on team scores as the tournament progresses.

Individual rankings and weigh-by-weight previews will com out Wednesday and Thursday.
