Previous: 5A Boys
As most of you know by now, our ranking gurus at wrestlingtexas.com also hold down day jobs. As such, we did not get all of the 5A girls district results compiled, analyzed and sorted in time to complete our regional previews with 20 ranked wrestlers in all weight classes. So, using our partial data set, which includes mostly top-10 rankings, here is a regional breakdown:
Region 1 – (Del Valle High School in El Paso) El Paso Hanks has 9 of the 38 ranked girls, the rest being largely spread amongst 18 other schools. Look for some exciting match-ups with the potential #1 v #2 bouts at 102lb and 110lb. Expect some fierce matches at 215lb as the #2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 ranked girls battle for the 4 spots at state. This is the one weight class where we are guaranteed that at least one of our top 6 ranked wrestlers will not be wrestling in the Berry Center next week.
Region 2 – (Frisco Wakeland HS) There are also 38 ranked girls in region 2, 6 from Frisco Liberty. Six of our top 12 165 pounders will square off in the bracket, as well as 5 at 128lb.
Region 3 – (Bryan High School) – Fifteen schools have at least one ranked girls, for a total of 30 ranked wrestlers. Houston Northside leads with 5. The 185lb bracket will have the toughest action with 4 of the top 6 ranked girls, led by #1, and defending 215lb champion ChiChi Nwankwo.
Region 4 – (Delco Activity Center, Austin) Rio Grande City high school also brings 5 ranked girls into the Delco Center, highest of the 14 schools with ranked girls. There are 24 ranked girls in the brackets. The top-ranked girls should have a clear road to state, with no more than one top-6 wrestler in any bracket. There are 4 top-12 in the 95, 102 and 138lb brackets.
Good Luck 5A girls!
