UIL Regional Championships – 5A Boys by the numbers

Previous: 6A Girls

Moving on to the 5A boys tournaments this weekend.  Much like the 6A girls, we have included all of the district results and filled out the 5A boys rankings complete with 20 names in each weight class.   Here is a regional breakdown:

Region 1 –   (Del Valle High School in El Paso) Dumas comes in with 8 of the 72 ranked wrestlers, highest among the 23 teams. All eyes on the 106lb bracket, with the top three and 6 of the top 16 battling for the 4 qualification spots.  126lb also has 6 ranked boys, and 138lb has a 1 v 2 showdown possible.

Region 2  – (Frisco Wakeland HS) Azle has 9 of the whopping 83 ranked wrestlers in Region 2.  In all, 28 teams bring at least one ranked boy into the regionals. The 220lb bracket has 7 of our top ranked boys, including ALL of the top four.  also look out for 1 1 v 2 potential at 182lb.

Region 3 – (Bryan High School) – Twenty five schools come in with a total of 55 ranked wrestlers, led by Richmond Foster’s 6.  There are no more than 4 top-16 boys at any weight, so we expect all of our top picks to advance.  Only 195lb has more than one top-5 boy, with the #1 and #4 in the bracket. This region is most ripe for a few surprises and upsets.

Region 4 – (Delco Activity Center, Austin) There are 70 ranked boys from 24 schools, led by Dripping Springs with 8.  120lb and 170lb each have 7 of the top-16, including 1 v 2 at 170lb.  Most other top-16 boys should qualify with few major obstacles.  Once again, the stage is set for some surprises.

Good Luck 5A boys – hope to see you next week at State!
